How to shop when you don’t know if it’ll be a boy or a girl

Baby clothing is adorable. All those mini shirts and pants, tiny little shoes and socks, and of course miniature accessories like hats! It’s a good thing that all new parents need baby clothing and that you can find such a wide variety when you’re shopping for a baby shower. But what if your friends aren’t going to know whether they’re having a boy or a girl until the baby is actually born? Or what if they’re keeping it a secret for now? While it’s getting less and less common, some people still do like to keep the gender of their baby secret and it can make shopping for baby clothing a bit more difficult.

Of course, there are also plenty of parents these days who don’t want their baby to wear gendered clothing. There’ll be plenty of time for a little girl to decide whether she likes pink or not on her own, so why not dress her in baby clothing in all colors? The same is true of parents of baby boys who are not interested in an entire nursery that’s colored baby blue. The fact is that today it’s not as big a deal to get everything in the “right” colors for the gender of the baby, so maybe shopping for baby clothing for a baby whose gender you don’t know shouldn’t be such a big deal anyway!

Choosing Colors

The only argument that people often have about neutral colored baby clothing is that sometimes it’s hard to tell whether a baby is a boy or a girl. It’s usually the clothing that gives it away for anyone who meets a new baby. And it’s highly likely that if you dress a girl in blue baby clothing, people will think she’s a baby boy. So even though you don’t want to be biased about the colors you choose, you still want to think about how you choose baby clothing colors.

Luckily, there are more colors out there than just blue and pink. All babies look good in green and yellow as well as gentle, neutral colors like white, shades of tan and off-white, and shades of grey. There are some really cute baby clothing options in these colors, and they can be quite stylish, too. If you’d rather make a statement with something bold and bright, consider orange or red baby clothing, which both look great on boys or girls. You can also do well with stripes or other patterns that are multicolored.

Onesies – The Easy Way Out

And all babies need onesies. You want to buy a little girl a skirt? Don’t worry, babies don’t wear skirts all that often anyway. Wait until she gets a bit bigger and then think about skirts. For newborns, onesies and tights are the uniform and you can’t go wrong if you buy cute options in a variety of colors.
