Ice cream is cold, sweet and oh so refreshing, but for a change from the ordinary, try Italian gelato. This dessert is just as delicious, but has the added advantage of offering unique ingredients and flavors. Whether you’re visiting Italy or just the aisles of your grocery store, try some gelato instead of ice cream. Your taste buds will thank you!

What Makes It Special
Gelato is native to Italy and some of the flavors that make it unique are regional specialties. When you take a visit to Rome or Venice, you’re likely to find cold treats flavored with black licorice, custard, cinnamon, rice, and other local favorites. Interested in sampling these exotic gelato flavors, but don’t want to spend the money for the plane ticket? There are a few authentic gelato makers producing these delicacies in the U.S. You can find them in some specialty grocery stores and local restaurants that have developed partnerships to sell the sweets.

For the Less Adventurous
While there are a plethora of unique ingredients that are used, you can still find familiar gelato flavors as well.  If you’re looking for the comfort of chocolate and vanilla, you can find it in the rich, creaminess of gelato. As well as these two traditional flavors, you can expect to find similar mild and recognizable tastes such as egg custard, coconut, and coffee. You don’t need to be adventurous to enjoy this Italian treat.

Go Nuts
Feeling nutty? You can find the flavor of cream and the healthful benefits of nuts all in one place. Some gelato comes with nuts as an added crunch or as the composition of the main flavor of the dessert. Popular and familiar nuts used in gelato include pistachio, almond, and hazelnut.  Another nut that is popular during certain seasons, but is less familiar to us, is the chestnut. When you visit a shop, you may be able to tell the flavor by the name or picture on the labels, but it might sometimes be a mystery.  Ask the attendant to sample some of the flavors or take your chances, be adventurous, and brave the unknown.

For authentic Italian gelato, choose G.S. Gelato products. They have signature and specialty flavors that will bring a unique taste to your home or business.
