When a natural disaster occurs in your area it is important to know what to do to avoid the dangers posed by electricity, downed wires and even the increased use of power generators in your own home or homes of those in your neighbourhood.

Preparation for Extreme Weather
Today’s weather trackers are often able to give fair warning when extreme weather is imminent. When you hear a weather warning for your area there are a few precautions you can take to avoid the dangers of electricity:

  • Turn off your home’s power source such as Siemens Circuit Breakers
  • Turn off all of your appliances
  • Disconnect your sockets

Watch for Downed Power Lines
During extreme storms downed power lines pose a great danger and many people leave their homes not realizing live wires may be right outside their door. The safest way to leave your home following an extreme storm is to shuffle as opposed to taking steps with your foot off the ground as this is when shock occurs. If you see any downed power lines, return to your home and call 9-1-1. If you are in your car during a storm and downed power lines fall on or around your car, keep both feet on the floor of your car and do not move. Call 9- 1-1 and do not leave your car. If your car is on fire, place both feet on the ground and use the same shuffling technique to leave the area.

Power Generator Safety
When there is the chance of prolonged power outages many homes will use a power generator. Although they can provide the electricity you need for your home they can also be the source of danger. When a storm is imminent place your generator in a spot where it will not be in contact with water. When using a power generator you actually require a special transfer switch. You cannot use your homes electrical outlets as you can “backfeed” power to power lines which can be deadly. If you are in an area prone to flooding, hurricanes, etc. it is advisable to have the transfer switch installed before buying a power generator.

Following these precautions will keep you safe following a natural disaster.
