After a mastectomy, most women undergo breast reconstruction surgery. However breast forms are another option if one decides to not have the breasts rebuilt because of age, medical issues, concerns about undergoing another surgery or simply because reconstruction is not the right option.

What is a breast form? A breast form is breast prosthesis designed to restore the natural look of one or both breasts and can be worn on top of the skin or in the pocket in a particular bra like a mastectomy bra or camisole. Mastectomy Breast forms help regain some symmetry and a better posture making it easier for a woman to look and feel good.

Breast forms: A full range of mastectomy breast forms are available. It is a good idea to consult a professional fitter. However, if you cannot afford one, here are few points that can help in choosing the best form for you:

* Size: The easiest and most accurate way to determine the size is to use your pre mastectomy bra size.

* Shape:

Full forms are fuller at both the top and bottom with a centrally placed nipple and are recommended for full breasted women.

Semi-full or tapered forms are fuller at the lower part of a lowly positioned nipple and are recommended for average breasted women.

Modified forms are shallower in depth and are recommended for women with tissue remaining under the arm and chest after surgery or women with small rounded breasts.

* Material:

Polyfill or Foam Forms are available in weighted and non-weighted, regular or quick-drying sports style. These are machine washable and can be worn under mastectomy bras, swimsuits and lounge wears; and in chlorinated and salt water.

Silicone Forms are durable and comfortable for everyday wear; they may be heavier than foam forms, but they provide support for a balanced posture, especially for women with large breasts. These need to be hand washed and are easily damaged by salt and chlorinated water.

Perma-form has light weight polyurethane foam sewn permanently in the bra and has a weighted core that gives balance to the body. However, it needs hand washing and line drying.

Mastectomy Breast forms can restore beauty and confidence and help you adjust to the physical changes in your body with style and comfort.
